When should I seek help for anxiety?

You can’t avoid anxiety. Whether it’s your first day on a new job, your child struggles at school, or your car breaks down; anxiety goes hand-in-hand with daily life.

Problems arise when you can’t shake the fear or dread, and you frequently feel anxious. If you stay on high alert and change your daily routine to avoid anxiety-causing people, places, and activities, it’s time to seek help.

What symptoms develop due to anxiety?

Though each anxiety disorder has unique symptoms, they all have the potential to cause:

  • Fear
  • Dread
  • Worry
  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Stomachaches
  • Muscle aches

Extreme anxiety may cause a panic attack, leading to sudden symptoms such as sweating, a racing heart, chest pain, and dizziness.

What type of anxiety disorder might I develop?

You can develop different types of anxiety disorders, such as phobias, separation anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. While Dr. Pearson treats all anxiety disorders, she specializes in helping people with generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

GAD causes excessive worry and fear about a variety of everyday issues like jobs, health, children, and finances. People with GAD often feel anxious even if they don’t face a specific problem or threat.

You may spend hours every day consumed with anxiety. People with GAD also feel restless, on edge, fatigued, and/or irritable. You may also have a hard time concentrating or feel like your mind sometimes goes blank.

Social anxiety disorder

Social anxiety disorder causes a persistent and intense fear of social situations, especially meeting new people, being in a public place, or needing to perform in front of others (like giving a report at work or school).

You may fear you will act inappropriately or worry about being embarrassed or rejected. People with social anxiety disorder also worry they may offend others.
